A biopsy is a procedure that takes a sample of affected tissue, in this case breast tissue, that has appeared abnormal in a mammogram or ultrasound. A pathologist looks at the tissue and can tell if the tissue sample contains benign or malignant cells.
Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy
If a mass is seen with the ultrasound, we use ultrasound guidance to localize the mass and then, take a tissue sample of that mass. The tissue is tested by a pathologist where it is confirmed to be benign or malignant.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
This kind of biopsy is done with the same mammogram machine we use to take the mammogram. This biopsy looks at calcifications within the breast to see if the cells surrounding the calcifications are benign or malignant.
